The great number of scientists, engineers, and managers who participated in the hitherto existing symposia reflects the high interest in the use of small satellites for dedicated missions applied to earth observation, from scientific earth observation missions to technology demonstration missions.

These types of missions can be conducted relatively quickly and inexpensively and provide increased opportunity for access to space

The spacecraft bus and instruments can be based either on optimized off-the-shelf systems, with little or no requirements for new technology, or on new high-technology systems. Thus a new class of advanced small satellites, including autonomously operating "intelligent" satellites may be created, opening new fields of application for scientific purposes as well as operational, public and commercial services.

The symposium will provide a forum for scientists, engineers and managers to exchange information about planned and on-going programs and missions, and present new ideas, covering small satellite mission objectives as well as technology and management aspects for dedicated earth observation satellites. To partially offset the cost of the Symposium, there will be a registration fee in the order of € 600 for participants registering by
January 31, 2017.
After that date, the registration fee will raise to € 700. The registration fee for students amounts to € 190.

The fee will cover admission to the sessions, the symposium digest, a copy of the proceedings published after the symposium, coffee breaks and lunch. A social program for accompanying persons will be organized.

IAA SSEO 2017 in berlin, Germany



It is a pleasure for the three General Chairmen to invite the international community to the 11th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation. The symposium will be hosted by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Technical University of Berlin and be held in Berlin from April 24 - 28, 2017. The successes of preceding IAA Symposia were shown by the high interest in the use of small satellites for dedicated missions applied to Earth observation, from scientific Earth observation to technology demonstration missions. In all of these IAA symposia, authors from about 35 countries, representing space agencies, industries, knowledge institutes, and academia confirmed in their oral and poster contributions that these types of missions can be conducted efficiently, provide increased opportunity for access to space and even realize new functionalities and services. The spacecraft bus and its payloads can be based either on optimized off-the-shelf systems, with little or no requirements for new technology, or on new high-technology systems. Thus a new class of advanced small satellites, including autonomously-operating „intelligent“ satellites can be created, opening new fields of application for science and the public.  Distributed Space Systems, such as constellations and formations, based on small satellites lead to a new economy in space.

This symposium again offers many opportunities for exchanging information, exploring new concepts, encouraging international cooperation in mission planning, and developing new collaborative relationships among individuals and institutions. We included again the Student Prize Paper Competition. The student papers have been evaluated by distinguished judges selected from academia, industry and government, coming from different continents. The prizes are funded by different organizations (industry and institutions). The IAA is pleased to serve as the principal sponsor of this symposium because its objectives complement and reinforce the purpose of the Academy.

It is a pleasure for the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Berlin-Adlershof to be the host of this symposium. DLR's site Berlin-Adlershof has been successfully involved in space research for many years. Together with other relevant institutes of the DLR, it is now involved in many international and national projects for Earth observations, planetary sciences, technology development and in-orbit verification. The Technische Universität Berlin is pleased to be the co-host of the 11th symposium. The TU Berlin has already brought into orbit 11 own satellites for Earth observation and satellite communication. They are designed, built and operated with students.

Last but not least, Berlin provides a good environment because this city continuously pursues new architectural approaches in urban development after the reunification of Germany. We believe that Berlin is a bridge between the West and East as well as the North and South. As in the previous symposia, Berlin may serve symbolically as a meeting place for information exchange and collaborative development between the two hemispheres, as well as a bridge between the classical space missions and innovative approaches using smaller and smaller satellites for dedicated objectives.

Objective of the Symposium

The Symposium will provide a forum for scientists, engineers and managers to exchange information and present new ideas, covering small satellite mission objectives as well as technology and management aspects for dedicated Earth observation satellites. Distinguished speakers, in-depth paper and poster sessions, and a Symposium summary are planned. Sessions will be held from Monday, April 24 through Thursday, April 27. On Friday, April 28, a visit is offered to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Berlin-Adlershof.

The authors / presenters of the best student papers will be awarded prizes funded by various organizations (industry and institutions) at the IAA Dinner on Tuesday night (April 25, 2017).

The presenters of the two best paper contributions and the two best interactive poster contributions will receive awards at the end of the Symposium.

Call for papers (pdf format version).

You are invited to contribute a paper for presentation at the symposium. A one-page, single-spaced abstract of no less than 300 and no more than 500 words*) must be received by 07 November, 2016.

Abstracts should be in English and should include the symposium topic addressed, the problem explored, the methodology used, results and conclusions so as to allow the Scientific Program Committee to make an informed decision regarding their suitability for inclusion into the symposium.
Notification of your paper's acceptance and author's instructions will be sent by 30 November 2016.
One copy of the symposium digest comprising the extended abstracts (four pages) will be part of the registration package handed over when registering on-site.
Final papers for the symposium proceedings are limited to eight pages, including tables and illustrations. The symposium proceedings will provide the contributed papers and interactive poster session papers presented during the symposium. They will be distributed on CD/DVD to the participants after the conference.
Outstanding presentations of papers and posters will be awarded.

The Archenhold-observatory is the oldest (and also the biggest) public observatory in Germany. Its founding year 1896 refers to the completion of its heartpiece, the giant telescope – although in this time, a different fate was thought for this instrument and it was not foreseeable that one day around this former showpiece of a great industrial exhibition a public observatory would establish with lecture halls, a library and observation domes. The Archenhold-observatory sees its task to popularize astronomy, its adjacent natural sciences, its methods and its history comprehensively and to clarify its cultural history background. The view especially on school-children has a tradition already going back to the founder of the observatory, Friedrich Simon Archenhold (1861 – 1939). Today, the observatory is part of the foundation Planetarium Berlin, to which also belong the Planetarium at the Prenzlauer Allee, the Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte in Steglitz and the adjacent Planetarium.

The giant telescope is now the longest instrument of its kind in the world and fully operable.

Built on the historical site at the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden, The Westin Grand Berlin, then known as the Grand Hotel Berlin, opened on August 1, 1987, right on time for the 750th jubilee celebrations of the city of Berlin – which was still divided at this time.

When designing the hotel, the architects of the Grand Hotel drew inspiration from the elaborate layout of the Kaiserpassage (Imperial Arcade), creating a unique structure which brought a piece of Berlin history back to life: an octagonal, 30-m-high hall with a glass roof and an imposing staircase. Today, it is still the very center of The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin; a veritable landmark which has been captured for posterity in countless TV and film productions. Just recall the scene in The Bourne Supremacy, where Matt Damon runs down the famous staircase.

On July 1, 1997, the Grand Hotel was renamed The Westin Grand Berlin, a brand of the worldwide Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and ever since, it has embraced the spirit of this inspirational hotel chain.

Learn about the FireBIRD - Mission and meet the FireBIRD - BIROS Satellite.DLR

Fire detection from space: FireBIRD is an earth observation mission with the primary goal of monitoring fires from space. It involves the detection of high-temperature events and the providing of remote sensing data for research at DLR and for external partners. The space segment consists of the two satellites TET-1 (Launch 2012) and BIROS (Launch 2016). The main payload for both satellites is a multispectral camera system.

Learn about the Mars-Express Mission and fly over the Mars in 3D! It follows an elliptical orbit around Mars, undisturbed, almost lonely – the orbiter Mars Express. For 11 years now European Space Agency longest-serving interplanetary mission has been travelling around our planetary neighbour. This will give the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) ), operated on board Mars Express by the German Aerospace Center numerous additional opportunities to record the entire surface of Mars in high resolution, colour and, above all, in 3D.

Every 15 minutes - starting from 10:45 up to 15:45

A sightseeing tour bus will pick you up at Gendarmenmarkt close to the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften. There are 18 bus stops at the most beautiful places in the town, where you can leave the bus and discover the town by your own as long as you want. The next bus will take you off and bring you to the next stop and at last home. Information in many languages is available at the sightseeing busses by headsets.

The rococo Palace of Sanssouci became the favourite refuge of Prussia’s greatest King, Friedrich II. The registration for the industry exhibition is now open. For all reservations received until 30th of November 2016 the following procedure will be implemented as follows:

First choice will be granted to the conference Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors. Regular exhibitors will gain their booth space allocation according to a point system based on previous participation and sponsoring. In case of equal points of two applicants a first come first serve rule will be implemented. The relevant time is when the conference organizers have received the fully filled and signed form.

Applicants after the 17th of November will get booth space allocated in a first come first serve order. All booth space is subject to availability. Final approval will be communicated to the applicants in a separate letter.
